Hen Party

Hello and welcome

I cant believe its Paint Party Friday time again!
This week has just flown past.  I have been busy painting all week for an exhibition which starts on Monday! I didn't think both my paintings would sell at the show last week but they did:) Great news but left me in a bit of a panic! But all is well, or just about, I have two more to finish off before Sunday.

I am sharing this one with you as it is the first painting I have done with the board vertical.
It took a while to do because there are so many faces! but it was fun to make an is nice and colourful with a light hearted theme.  I had no idea where this was going when I started out but had the idea to put something on their heads.  The hen was first and when I looked at it I just saw "party hats" and that was it, a bit quirky and I might add a few more touches here and there.... if I have time.

I will look forward to seeing all your work over the weekend

Thank you for taking the time to stop by
Have a great week end and a Happy PPF

Ladder to the Moon and some unexpected good news

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog

This week I have something a bit different to share with you.
I always seem to find inspiration amongst the online challenges and one that I visit regularly is Collage Obsession This week the theme was "Ladders".  I thought about doing a lady on stilts but decided to keep that idea for another day.  Then I thought about an "escape ladder" and had the idea of painting a wall with a window and a ladder go escape with.  I had an old piece of wood which had previously had a woman with a skirt made with pieces of tissue paper with stars on. I had already painted over the whole thing in dark brown and decided to add some texture with modelling paste. When it dried, it looked like this!

Its upside down from how it had been originally but weird how the stars came through both the paint and the paste?  When I saw this I thought it looked like the night sky and my idea changed to "ladder to the Moon"

I didn't realize how popular this theme was until I started to look it up on the web.

Ladder to the Moon by Georgia O'Keeffe in 1952 painted when she was 71 years old

"The images are all of transition: the ladder itself implies passage from one level to another; the moon is cut neatly in half by the bold slicing light, halfway between full and new; and the evening sky is in flux, still pale along the line of the horizon, shading into deep azure night at the top of the canvas".

and........the unexpected good news.....
Remember the painting I shared with you last week? "The Wishing Tree" Well I entered it into the County show and it won 3rd prize!!!!

If the photo looks like its at a funny angle its because my 5 year old son took it!! :)

Thank you for visiting me
Hope you all have a great weekend and a very Happy Paint Party Friday

The Wishing Tree on Paint Party Friday

Hello and Welcome

This weeks work has been inspired by the circus.
A few weeks back I read a book called The Night Circus. It was so full of magic and mystery, not your average "circus" themed story! Then a couple of days ago I heard this song on you tube.

Again, a bit strange but beautiful, I think.
That's when I knew my next piece had to be Circus related.

I really enjoy doing these tall ladies, they are kind of out of proportion but still work. It makes me think they might be standing on stilts. Oh! now there's an idea:)

Seasoned Flappers

Hello and Welcome to everyone

While I was thinking about where to source reclaimed wood for my art, I decided to have a hunt through the house to see what we had lying around that I might be able to paint on.  It's amazing, the amount of stuff I found, put down and long forgotten or off cuts kept (just in case)! Well I was inspired by 4 circular pieces of wood that were meant to be bases but never used.

I had already collected an image of four flapper friends from the 1920's and thought them perfect for this project.  I was inspired to paint seasonal flowers around the outside and up the edges of the wood to finish them off and add a theme to the work.

More tea Vicar?

Hello and welcome

For todays Paint Party Friday I would like to share a new work I have called "More tea Vicar?"  I have had a wood panel that I had completed a background on but just couldn't think of what to put on it, that was until I found this wonderful quirky photograph of a Victorian lady carrying two cups and saucers on her breasts!! Very different from the themes of late, this one just made me smile :) I hope you like it too!

Mother Nature

Hello and Welcome

I would like to share with you my new work.  It's the largest piece I have done in this style being 46"x5" It's called 'Mother Nature'.  I got the inspiration for this piece from Collage Obsession where this weeks theme is Emerald.  As soon as I started to think about this theme my thought process went along the lines of... 'green', 'green lady', 'Maid Marian', 'Mother Nature'
With such a long board to paint on this was somewhat of a challenge for me. I had work with the composition without the lady being too low or too high and how to fill the space around her with out her looking too much out of proportion.  I looked on you tube to learn how to paint trees, and ground foliage/flowers (which was great fun!) It was slow going with this one (so slow that I am linking it with Paint Party Friday as well!!) and has been quite a learning curve, but I finally got there :)

The Candle Crown

Hello and Welcome

I cant believe how quickly the Easter break has come and gone.
I have made the most of being with my boys while they were on holiday so much so that blogging took a back seat for a while even though my intentions were good!.

I have managed to do some work for this weeks Paint Party Friday that I would like to share with you

 The Candle Crown
Mixed media collage and acrylic paint
5"x39" reclaimed floorboard

I have been collecting images of headdresses and crowns lately and when I saw this candle crown I knew I had to use it for this piece!
I had this idea of having butterflies at the bottom and stars at the top but now that's its finished I am not sure whether they all kind of dominate the painting and overshadow the crown somewhat?

let me know what you think?
